Virginia Tech on Niche’s 2026 Best College Food list

Recalling the cafeterias of one’s alma mater is often akin to being kicked into a purgatory of culinary blandness. That is apparently far from the case for students at modern-day Virginia Tech, where a recent poll from online collegiate search guide, Niche, said 96 percent gave the school’s campus dining services top gastronomical ratings.

That was just one among a deluge of factors that led Niche to crown VT as the nation’s second-best school for foodie scholars in 2026. The website ranks institutions based on students’ ability to easily access “affordable, healthy, quality food across a wide range of cuisines and dietary preferences.”

VT boasts an impressive 56 dining options strategically positioned in nine separate buildings across its 2,600-acre campus. Chic, metropolitan-grade food courts hold a variety of chains like Chick-fil-A and Qdoba, but the marquis acts are original, self-operated concepts. At Turner Place, for instance, you’ll find tasty, Southern meat-and-three options at 1872 Fire Grill alongside hibachi and sushi staples from Japanese-themed Origami.

Dishes boast ingredients from the school’s dairy, poultry, and cattle programs, and fruits, herbs, and veggies from its 12-acre organic farm. Composting and food insecurity initiatives, meanwhile, have saved 15 million pounds of biodegradable waste from landfills and redistributed 260,000 pounds of surplus meals since 2009.

VT Director of Dining Services Brian Grove says Niche’s designation shines a light on the “amazing work that our team does here. We’re passionate about providing the best dining experiences possible for our students, and this recognition is a testimony to our success in fulfilling that mission.”
