Creative Services Director


Short Job Description:

The ideal candidate should have a strong and varied design portfolio, possess the technical and organizational skills of a production manager, and be able to drive the advertising design direction for the magazine, website, newsletters, and sales collateral. Solid graphic design skills should be married to technical savvy and the strong ability to multi-task.  

Requirements include a minimum of three years in a graphic designer or production role—preferably with a publication—expertise in the Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and MS Office Suite, and proficiency in the digital workspace.


  1. Design and/or traffic all advertisements running in Virginia Living magazine, Newsletters, and
  2. Communicate clearly with Advertising Executives and advertisers
  3. Perform quality checking and proofing of all provided camera-ready artwork from customers, advertising agencies, and designers
  4. Finalize all advertising pages, export PDFs, upload to printer for soft-proofing
  5. Soft proof final advertising page layouts
  6. Complete post-production tasks
  7. Develop and maintain master layouts
  8. Update and produce all magazine and sales collateral (banners, business cards, sell sheets, contracts, media guides, etc.) and media related to Virginia Living, newsletters, and
  9. Produce all house ads for other media, playbills, etc.
  10. Manage Email lists using HubSpot
  11. Set up staff email accounts
  12. Other duties as assigned


Have three years of high-level design and production experience at a magazine, ad agency, or other communications organization

  • B. A. or Masters in Graphic Design or similar degree,
    and comparable professional experience
  • Superior design and art direction skills
  • Expert in Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
  • Proficient in digital workspace
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, Wordpress
  • Strong project management experience and organizational skills
  • Strong typographic and color skills
  • Skilled in Macintosh environment
  • Branding and marketing experience
  • Be able to brainstorm ideas
  • Be personable and possess a collegial working style
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure
  • Ability to communicate clearly and directly
  • Photography and illustration skills a plus
  • Strong familiarity with the state of Virginia

Reports to the Publisher, John-Lawrence Smith

Hours:  8:30 to 5:30, M-F and more as needed.  8:30 to 5:30 Saturday and Sunday on 6 “Layout Weekends” per year (1 hour comp time earned per 1 hour worked on these weekends.)

Location:  Headquarters at 109 East Cary Street, Richmond, Virginia
