Made in Virginia 2014: Glass House Winery, Free Union

Glass House Winery

At Glass House Winery, wine might lead on the marquee, but the handmade chocolates are a close second. In 2006, Michelle and Jeff Sanders took stock of their combined talents and aimed at a broad market, creating a winery that also produces chocolates. Jeff covered the wine part. For the chocolates, Michelle—who had long before perfected the confections—started with a box that would ship well. (Worth noting: The box is a keeper. Pretty and sturdy with a magnetized closure, it makes a great gift box.) Then she developed six flavors: two signature pieces (wine cream and salted caramel), along with espresso-Kahlua, hazelnut, rum and cocque (coconut), and Earl Grey tea, all enrobed in dark chocolate and topped with intricate, edible cocoa butter designs, making them as pretty as they are yummy. $21 per 12-piece box.
