Charlottesville may feel like a small town, but it boasts more restaurants per capita than some of the biggest cities in the U.S. From hungry college kids to wine-obsessed foodies, there really is something for everyone here.
Historic Michie Tavern, c. 1784, serves a heaping (and delicious) taste of 18th-century fare, and The Virginian, with its burger, sandwich, and salad-forward menu has been a C’ville tradition since 1927. Making culinary waves are the upscale, chef-driven spots like Tavola, Broadcloth, Birch + Bloom, and Mockingbird, along with international restaurants like Smyrna (Aegean), Conmole (Mexican-Oaxacan), and Mas (Spanish). Pastry lovers are spoiled by French-inspired options like MarieBette Cafe and Cou Cou Rachou, and even the most indecisive diners can find something to love at the sprawling Dairy Market food hall, which boasts 16 merchants including food, coffee, and beer. With so much going for Charlottesville’s culinary scene, it’s no wonder the city has been racking up accolades from the food experts at Food & Wine, Southern Living, Eater, and The Local Palate.
