6 Virginia Apple Orchards You Don’t Want to Miss This Fall

As October descends, memories of apple picking begin to resurface. Chilly mornings, driving up winding roads, and admiring the changing leaves—it’s autumn … A childlike type of joy reignites as you get on your tippy-toes to reach the biggest, shiniest apple on the tree.

Here’s where to go apple picking in Virginia.

Carter Mountain Orchard

1435 Carters Mountain Trl., Charlottesville

The orchard is set on top of Carter Mountain, making the drive windy with a breathtaking view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This orchard is a feast of the senses. In addition to apple picking throughout the fall, you can purchase homegrown wine from the wine shop, drink a crisp cider from the Bold Rock Taproom, and top it off with a browse through the Country Store & Bakery. The award-winning apple cider donuts are a must!

Great Country Farms

34345 Snickersville Tpk., Bluemont

A Loudoun County favorite for apple picking in Northern Virginia, Great Country Farms is hosting its first LoCo Cider Fest this year, featuring homemade Virginia cider accompanied by stunning views of the orchard and live music (Saturday, Nov. 15).

Showalter’s Orchard & Greenhouse

17768 Honeyville Rd., Timberville

Located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, Showalter’s upholds tradition by selling freshly picked fruit and the same beloved apple cider since 1975. The site is home to Virginia’s Old Hill Hard Cider, where they craft delectable drinks on-site.

Bush Neck Farm

1502 Bush Neck Rd., Williamsburg

Don’t count out the coastal plains when looking for apple orchards—tiny but mighty, Bush Neck Farm is founded along the Chikahominy River, which gives the place its lovely, coastal atmosphere. You can pick a variety of succulent apples and quirky pumpkins throughout fall.

Cullipher Farm

772 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach

What could be better than apple picking in this seaside city? Cullipher Farm has an array of activities, including a play area, farm animals you can meet, and their annual corn maze if you’re up for the challenge. Make sure to check out their vibrant produce and farm-raised Hallow Tree Branch Beef.

Stribling Orchard

11587 Poverty Hollow Ln., Markham

History runs deep within the roots of Stribling Orchard apple trees. The first apple trees were planted in the mid-18th century; it’s safe to say they’ve seen a lot! Stribling Orchard is where this writer’s family goes apple picking—I can confirm this orchard has beautiful views and mouth-watering apple cider donuts worthy of daydreams.
