Madison & Riley

From rivals to romance, a union sealed in Richmond flair.

An enemies-to-lovers romance might be an unconventional way to fall in love, but it worked for Madison and Riley Fisher. “Each thought the other was insufferable,” recalls maid of honor, Emily King, of their early days at the University of Mary Washington’s business school. But as friends nudged them along, Madison and Riley gradually grew on each other.

“The summer after graduation, we shared a sneaky kiss on the dance floor and stayed up all night talking about a future together,” Madison says. “We never looked back.”

Riley later planned a surprise proposal on a boat trip along the James River. As they approached The Boathouse in Richmond, friends and family gathered on the balcony to cheer—though Riley hadn’t yet gotten down on one knee. “I knew it was coming,” Madison laughs. “I said ‘I do’ anyway.” Their wedding embraced Richmond traditions, with a ceremony at Main Street Station and a feast from the iconic ZZQ.

She Said, He Said

Vision?

They said: Disco ball, dark academia with a martini in hand.

First look?

He said: We did a first look on the terrace at Main Street Station. Maddy was as beautiful as I’ve ever seen her. I knew I wanted to marry her since staying up and talking about our lives that first night. I was so excited for it to finally be happening!

She said: Seeing Riley on the terrace for our first look made me buzz from the inside out. He looked dapper in his Ralph Lauren suit and velvet slippers. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world.

Smartest save?

They said: High quality buffet trumps gourmet prepared dishes. ZZQ catered our special day, and they were reasonable, professional, and delivered barbecue that our friends and family continue to rave about today.

Advice for the engaged?

They said: Everyone wants to get married in the fall and spring, but a winter wedding makes planning easy—there is less competition and no issues with weather as all events are indoors!
