Joseph Papa & John-Stuart Newberry Fauquet

May 24, 2015 • Private Residence, Richmond

They were seeing other people when they first met at a Labor Day party in 2011, but Joseph Papa and John-Stuart Newberry Fauquet instantly hit it off: “In a friendly way,” laughs Joseph. Even in a city as large as New York, where they live and work—Joseph as a book-publicity director for HarperCollins Publishers and John-Stuart as a theater director, teacher and dramaturge and senior executive search associate for Bonell Ryan Inc., a professional recruiting firm—they kept running into each other. Fast-forward to 2012: Both found themselves unattached. This situation did not go unnoticed by a mutual friend who facilitated a meeting between the two one summer evening. “The very next day we went to lunch and then to dinner,” says Joseph. Just two years later John-Stuart surprised Joseph at home with a room full of his favorite hydrangeas, a proposal of marriage and two rings—one for each of them. Joseph, a native of Petersburg and Richmond, and John-Stuart, who grew up in Hickory, North Carolina, accepted their friend Whitney Cardozo’s generous offer to hold their wedding at her home in Richmond’s West End. The flower girl rode a pony in to the ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 friends, family and acclaimed performers, including close friend actress Molly Ringwald, who sang “The Nearness of You.”
