There are just enough years between them that Richmond natives Rebecca Ott and John Piersol did not cross paths as students at the University of Virginia, but not so many that they did not have a mutual friend or two from their undergraduate days in Charlottesville. The pair met while out at dinner one night in 2013 in Richmond, but dating did not begin until after a summer of what Rebecca calls a “thoroughly modern social-media flirtation.” John, an English and drama teacher at Richmond’s Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School, and Rebecca, who works for her father’s engineering firm, Milestone Consultants, Inc., and writes a fashion and lifestyle blog called The Crystal Press, shared their first evening alone on the front porch of John’s parents’ home in the Fan. So when he planned his proposal, he selected that same front porch as his setting. “I was completely surprised when John dropped to one knee on the very spot where I first considered the fact that I might be falling in love with him,” says Rebecca. Their summer wedding at The Homestead fulfilled Rebecca’s dream of a traditional wedding with fun modern twists. She wore the same dress worn by her grandmother and mother (both also named Rebecca). John’s friend and lead singer of the Charlottesville-based band Sons of Bill officiated, and John’s godfather, the actor Will Patton, read a passage from John’s favorite book, William Faulkner’s Go Down, Moses. “It was absolutely incredible,” says Rebecca.
