On Saturday, Oct. 15, catch the Virginia Luthiers when they perform an indoor show at the Blue Ridge Music Center near Galax.
Legendary luthier Wayne Henderson, whose guitars have been played by some of the best bluegrass and acoustic pickers in the world, including the late Doc Watson, anchors the group. He has made more than 650 guitars during his 50-plus years in the business, and taken first place 13 times at the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention guitar competition. In 1995, he was honored with the National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Guitar-maker since 2001 Jimmy Edmonds, a prodigy who began playing when he was just five years old and placed first in the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention eight years in a row, plays fiddle. Gerald Anderson, a former student of Henderson’s who crafts guitars and mandolins, is on bass, and Spencer Strickland, the group’s youngest member and a protégé of Anderson’s is on mandolin.
