Made in Virginia 2015: Duvall Designs, Millwood

Duvall Designs

Though he has owned a thriving custom home building business since 1992, architect Jay Duvall always had an affinity for furniture and design—the detailed front doors, the custom stained glass, the built-in fixtures. It wasn’t until nearly 20 years later, however, that what had become a side project took center stage, when Duvall and wife Peggy decided to turn their attention to furniture full-time. Duvall’s customizable tables and chairs, made from locally sourced and reclaimed wood and stone, are for the homeowner, he says, “who has a strong interest in the art of the furniture, as opposed to just the utility.” Perhaps nowhere is that more evident than in Duvall’s dovetailed leg table, with its finely worked joinery. What he describes as a “very primary, simple joint,” elevates the piece. “It’s still really a structural thing, but I like to show it off, so it becomes an aesthetic.” $900-$1,200.
