Coming in Clutch

Style inspired by Judith Leiber.

Permanently on display in the Shaftman Gallery at the Taubman Museum, Judith Leiber: Earthly Delights features flora- and fauna-themed creations from the more than 130 minaudières and pillboxes in the museum’s collection of the iconic designer’s work. Sydney and Rosalie Kirsch Shaftman, who began collecting the luxe clutches in the 1980s, gifted the pieces to the Roanoke museum from 2005 to 2008. “The bags are so beautifully designed and created that they are considered works of decorative art,” says Amy Moorefield, deputy director of exhibitions and collections. For those fearing the tiny dazzlers are too impractical for a night on the town, Moorefield says the Hungarian-born designer has a word of advice: “It is said that Judith Leiber remarked that all a woman needed to go out on the town was a tube of lipstick and a $100 bill.” We quite agree.
