Red Wing Roots Festival, Mount Solon, July 11-13

Beards, flannels and fiddles abound at the Red Wings Roots Festival, the brainchild of Harrisonburg American roots band The Steel Wheels. Folk acts such as The Devil Makes Three play four stages, and activities, including group bike rides take advantage of the beautiful local terrain. Teens $39, adults $129, children 12 and under free.

FloydFest, Floyd, July 23-27

For five days, 80 acres of the Blue Ridge Parkway host the epic FloydFest, which this year welcomes Ben Harper and Charlie Musslewhite, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Thievery Corporation and others to its three stages. Check out the Healing Arts Village for massages, yoga and meditation classes. $30-$295.

Verizon Wireless American Music Festival, Virginia Beach, August 29-31

Each year, summer on the oceanfront wraps up with the American Music Festival, where lineups have included ZZ Top, KC & The Sunshine Band, the Zac Brown Band and Little Richard, among many others. $35 passport pin for admission to all main stage events.

Lockn’: Interlocking Music Festival, Arrington, September 4-7

This year venerable rock legends like the Allman Brothers Band and Willie Nelson play alongside indie favorites like Gary Clark Jr., Grace Potter & the Nocturnals and Wilco at this four-day festival located less than an hour south of Charlottesville. $180-$699.
