Kaleo Kala says he’s not much of a sketch artist. Instead, when inspiration strikes the custom furniture designer and maker, he rolls the concept over and over in his mind: “When I go to build, I’ve already built the design in my mind 1,000 times.” The inspiration for his new line of lamps? “The Edison bulb. I wanted to make a cylinder and tie it all together …. the long thin bulbs and the long thin cylinder base.” The next step came when he realized that the cast-off pieces of walnut from larger commissioned furniture projects crowding his workshop could be used to create something new, something unexpected.
