Made in Virginia 2014: Red Truck Bakery, Marshall

Red Truck Bakery

We thought we’d achieved nirvana when we tasted Red Truck Bakery’s double-chocolate moonshine cake, which owner Brian Noyes developed because “the first moonshiner in Virginia to go legitimate .… lived over in the next county.” But this year, seeking “something lighter and more citrusy,” the former magazine and newspaper art director trotted out the lemon and blueberry version, and suddenly the original had some competition. “Chocolate pushes everybody’s buttons,” says Noyes, who opened the Warrenton-based Red Truck Bakery five years ago. But after a bite of the lemon-blueberry, “they keep coming back for more.” Don’t worry; the cake won’t feed an alcohol addiction. It’s the blueberries you have to watch out for. “They soak up so much moisture,” says Noyes. “They’re like little fragrant bombs.” Lemon & Blueberry Moonshine Cake, $24. RedTruckBakery.com
