Nothing says summer quite like picnics—choosing the perfect grassy spot under a shady tree while the sunlight dances over a comfy blanket; life can’t get better than that. Whether it’s at a park or in your own backyard, a picnic spells a perfect idyllic afternoon. It’s no wonder so many master painters have been inspired by it. I wish I could have snagged an invitation to “A Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte” (1884). Georges Seurat and his friends really knew what the perfect picnic meant.
But besides good weather and great company, what’s the secret to making a picnic perfect? I asked picnic pros and style makers to weigh in. Tara Wegdam, owner of Crème de la Crème, the charming, Euro-inspired home goods store headquartered in Middleburg, says, “The details are what elevate a picnic and make it feel memorable.” Her secret? Mixing pieces that feel polished but are still practical for outdoor entertaining. Tara, along with picnic pros across the Commonwealth, weighed in with more tips:
What’s your favorite spot for a picnic?
Ashlie Hampton, Perfect Spread, Eastern Virginia: Virginia offers so many incredible picnic locations, but I especially love waterfront settings and scenic parks throughout the Hampton Roads and Williamsburg areas.
Diandra Jenkins, Posh Life RVA: Maymont Park and Byrd Park in Richmond. Both have gorgeous gardens, greenery, and peaceful scenery.
Polina Wright, Picnic RVA: I love Libby Hill Park for a sunset picnic because the city views are incredible. Byrd Park is another favorite, especially under one of the big shady trees for a laid-back afternoon.
Tara Wegdam, Crème de la Crème: Middleburg’s quiet scenic overlooks and countryside views you stumble upon while driving through horse country—the area is just so naturally beautiful. I also love heading toward Goose Creek for a more peaceful afternoon outdoors, and Sky Meadows is incredible for its sweeping mountain views and wide-open landscapes. Paris, Virginia, is another favorite.
What’s your number one tip for organizing the perfect picnic?
A.H.: Choose a beautiful location, add comfortable seating, thoughtful décor, and a few personal touches that make guests feel relaxed and special. Preparation is key—having everything set up before guests arrive allows everyone to truly enjoy the moment and connect with nature and each other.
D.J.: Focus on the atmosphere just as much as the food. A picnic should feel like an experience, not just a meal outdoors.
P.W.: The best picnics are relaxing, intentional, and comfortable, and that can be easily achieved with a plush blanket, a beautiful view under a shady tree, background music, or bringing a mindful activity to unplug for a couple of hours. I like a book, a little canvas and paint kit, or a deck of conversation cards. If you really want to take it to the “pro” level, bring some throw pillows and fresh flowers to make the picnic feel more polished and luxurious.

What’s a food item or a drink that should make your must-have list?
A.H.: We love serving fruit-infused water or refreshing lemonade, especially during warm Virginia afternoons.
D.J.: Charcuterie, charcuterie, charcuterie!
P.W.: I am biased to say a charcuterie board! Pop a couple of cheeses, salami, juicy fruits, cornichons or olives, chocolate, and something crunchy, and you’ve hit every craving.
T.W.: One thing I always come back to is a really good chicken salad. It’s classic, versatile, and has become my go-to for an easy outdoor meal. I usually make it with rotisserie chicken, which keeps preparation simple while still feeling homemade.
