Valentine’s in Virginia: Winter Dates Across the State

Date of the Arts • Roanoke

Wide halls decorated with resplendent artworks are fit for wandering at the Taubman Museum of Art, where the romantic Eternally New: The Art Nouveau World of Alphonse Mucha exhibition is open through March 16. Lush bites are available nearby—American fine dining establishments Lucky and Alexander’s are both within walking distance. From there, it’s a short drive to Common Clay Pottery Workshop for a “Date Night” lesson in clay sculpture to put the museum’s creative inspiration to action.

Play-Date for All Ages • Manassas

If love turns everyone into a child at heart, then Manassas is where that rediscovered youthfulness can rein free. Harris Pavilion provides winter scenery, and Crossroads Tabletop Tavern, a board game restaurant with more than 2,000 game options, is just a walk away. Plus, there’s plenty of coffee and shopping spots to stop for cozying up between the two.

Dive into Romance • Virginia Beach

The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is made for conversation as deep as its fascinating creatures’ natural ocean habitat. Blue, wavering light through large aquarium tanks and an exhibit of giant, wooden troll sculptures make for a mystical experience. For those really hooked on marine wonders, behind-the-scenes tours, including feeding the center’s rays, are offered.

Hiking Hand in Hand • Luray

The views from hiking endpoints, hilltops, scenic roads, and overlooks in Shenandoah National Park are stunning and unimpeded by leaves in the winter season. Outdoorsy couples can enjoy the climbs without the crowds and retreat to cabin comforts or small-town charm in Luray to unwind.

The Classic Dinner and a Show • Charlottesville

Historic Charlottesville offers the perfect setting for a tried-and-true date night favorite. The Downtown Mall is home to a variety of restaurants suited for delectable meals and happy hour drinks, as well as the Paramount Theater, where movies, musicians, and live Broadway broadcasts alternately play. Out-of-owners can stay at the close-by Omni Charlottesville for added convenience. And for the super romantic, head to The Clifton just outside of town for a night of fine dining and an evening bathed in luxury.
