Surf’s up in Virginia Beach

We all know Virginia Beach for its oceanside offerings: the sand, sunshine, and its white caps and crashing waves—beach is literally in its name, after all. And from Aug. 18–25, it’s time to put that wave energy to good use on a surfboard. As the longest, continually running surfing contest in the world (62 years and counting), the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) is a Virginia athletic event to add to your bucket list, featuring several pro-am events and a women’s World Surf League competition. “Whether you’re an athlete or spectator, we have something for everyone,” says Tony Pellino, ECSC general manager. There is a lineup of beach volleyball, cornhole, block parties, and more. “No matter where you walk the 10-city block footprint of ECSC,” he adds, “there is nothing but smiles, laughter, and cheer.” Professionals, amateurs, and viewers are all welcome.
