Summer Cookin’

Groove at jazz festivals in Richmond and Norfolk.

Soul and rhythm ‘n blues icons take the stage at the 12th annual Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont Aug. 9-12.

The line-up for the world famous festival features a roster of star power, including Gladys Knight, Frankie Beverly & Maze, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, the O’Jays, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joss Stone and more.

Dozens of food vendors from gourmet food trucks to mobile soul food kitchens add to the sense of ritual and seasonal rite that many bring to the fan-favorite event. Single day passes for the main concerts at Maymont start at $78.50. Kick-off events at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts are free.

If you’d rather put your toes in the sand while diggin’ summer grooves, Hampton Roads’ longest running outdoor jazz festival returns for two nights along the Downtown Norfolk waterfront.  The 33rd Norfolk Waterfront Jazz Festival, Aug. 24-25, features top national smooth jazz artists Marcus Anderson, Boney James and Norman Brown. Two-day passes start at $30. No worries if it rains—in the event of inclement weather, the festival will be moved to Norfolk Scope Arena.
