You go to the spa to relax, but the menu of treatments can be overwhelming. Here we break down some of the most common services to help you choose the perfect way to pamper yourself.

Not sure which massage to schedule? Glynda Antonio of LaSource Spa in Kilmarnock explains the two most common varieties: “Deep tissue massage builds on Swedish massage, employing many of its basic strokes but applying more pressure. Whereas Swedish massage is typically performed with the hands and fingertips, deep tissue massage also employs elbows and forearms to reach deep layers of muscle tissue.”

For something more luxurious, try a body treatment. Mark Smith at The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg explains, “Scrubs will gently remove unwanted dead skin cells and leave your skin soft and healthy looking. They help to exfoliate dead skin and thoroughly clean the body.” Try the spa’s orange and ginger body scrub. “Body wraps leave your skin detoxified, nourished, supple, and help to reduce the appearance of cellulite, and much more,” he continues. For this, try the seaweed body detox treatment.

Newer innovations include salt caves and float tanks, both available at the Williamsburg Salt Spa. Mineral-rich salt caves are said to help respiratory and inflammatory conditions; float tanks are meant to relieve stress and muscle pain.
