Hargrave Military Academy announced the revival of its aviation program through a strategic partnership with Averett University’s FAA-approved Part 141 flight school in Danville. The collaboration allows Hargrave cadets to pursue aviation studies, complete ground-school and flight lab courses for college credit, and gain hands-on flight experience.
“The desired outcome is for cadets to complete ground school and flight lab, progressing through ‘solo flight’ by the end of the fall semester,” explains Hargrave Academic Dean Jim Tung. “We may look to expand to private pilot certification in the future.”
Averett’s aeronautics program, established in 1980 by World War II bomber pilot George Falk, has grown to become the university’s sixth-largest major. The university now operates as the fixed-base operator for Danville Regional Airport, providing comprehensive aviation services.
“This partnership both provides Hargrave with a powerful differentiator and introduces Averett’s Aeronautics program to another cohort of great students,” notes Averett President Tiffany M. Franks. The program addresses critical workforce needs in aeronautics education while leveraging Averett’s airport management capabilities.
Cadets attend classes at Averett three days weekly, with transportation provided. In addition, the program maintains rigorous admission standards. Cadets must also show good character and leadership potential in keeping with its mission to build young men into leaders of character prepared for lifelong success.
The comprehensive program costs $7,600, covering four college credits, FAA exam fees, and aircraft operational expenses. Hargrave.edu; Averett.edu
