Roanoke’s Taubman Museum of Art turns 75 this year—and is celebrating the milestone in a big way. The diamond jubilee kicked off with a New Year’s bash, but the celebration is all year long.
The festivities include commemorative exhibitions and a slew of special events intended to highlight the museum’s ongoing impact in the region.
Guided tours, for instance, will showcase the 81,000-square-foot, downtown building’s eye-catching, avant-garde architecture by internationally renowned architect Randall Stout. It includes an atrium with a pointed, 77-foot glass peak that tips its hat to the Roanoke Star and offers lovely views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
Other tours will tell the story of the Taubman’s 2,400-plus-piece permanent collection, 10 percent of which is represented by past or current Virginia artists. TaubmanMuseum.org
