Inside Gloucester’s Village Blacksmith

George Cramer opened his smithy shop in Gloucester in 2015 after decades of training in metalwork, bringing with him a wealth of experience in the craft of blacksmithing. From handforged tools like axes and hammers, to accessories like hooks and ornaments, plus an assortment of furniture, lamps, fences, gates, and fireplace tools and screens, Cramer and his team can custom-forge just about anything.

And Cramer’s work doesn’t always stay local. His clients circle the globe, and his expertise is a sought-after commodity. With his work featured on National Geographic programs and in numerous magazines and newspapers, he’s also consulted on movies—he made pistols for the 2019 feature film Harriet, and for NatGeo, he recreated the “hot shot” that sank the HMS Charon in 1781 during the Revolutionary War.
