The Branch Museum of Design in Richmond unveils its captivating Re-Think Design series with Re-Think Landscape Design, a dual exhibition, through June 8, celebrating both the storied past and sustainable future of landscape architecture.
Genius by Nature in the Main Gallery highlights the masterful legacy of Charles Gillette (1886–1969), whose “Virginia Garden” style transformed the Southern landscape by weaving classical European elegance with native sensibilities and Colonial Revival elements. Architects and historic preservationists Amie Rennolds and Mimi Sadler, both native Richmonders, crafted a journey through 14 of Gillette’s significant works—from educational campuses to residential sanctuaries—brought to life through photography and architectural renderings.
The Long Gallery’s Habitat Stewardship exhibition explores ecological design. Curated by landscape architect Anna Aquino with Tracy Harris Bernabo and Donata Kraskauskaite, this thought-provoking space bridges artistic celebration of nature with cutting-edge conservation practices, linking visitors to resources like the Xerces Society, Bee City, and Dark Skies initiatives.
Throughout both spaces, sustainable works from local artisans, including Richmond’s McKinnon and Harris, showcase how designers honor Gillette’s vision while embracing environmental stewardship. “These exhibitions speak to the artistry of garden design and the current ecological initiatives to protect habitats and wildlife,” says Branch Museum executive director Kristen Cavallo. “The guest curators have captured the beauty of Charles Gillette and the need for stewardship to protect gardens and landscapes for future generations.” BranchMuseum.org
