If you’d like to get involved in the arts but aren’t sure how, there’s good news: Notable institutions and production companies offer courses, classes, and many other ways to join the fun.

For example, RAL Art Center in Kilmarnock offers workshops for both adults and children on topics ranging from watercolor and photography to charcoal and pottery. Arts on Main in Gloucester also hosts workshops for both adults and children, including fluid acrylics and floral design classes.

Many local production companies, including the Lancaster Players in White Stone and the Westmoreland Players in Callao, are run by volunteers. You can get involved by serving as a stage manager, cast member, or director, or you can help out backstage by building sets, working on lighting and sound, or putting together costumes and props.

At the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, “We have an incredibly creative staff who are always brainstorming new ways to engage our community, whether it’s through creative tours, dance performances in the galleries, or after-dark evening events with art-inspired games,” says Seth Ferman, deputy director for art and interpretation. “For example, our gallery hosts create elaborate costumes inspired by artworks in the museum every Halloween. We always endeavor to make art approachable and evocative.”
