Raw, Splendid Nature

A full slate of summer activities await at Primland.

If you’ve been to 12,000-acre luxury resort Primland, in Patrick County’s ruggedly exquisite Meadows of Dan, you may already know that nature is the star of the show. Everything from the cedar and stone 26-room lodge and its two-story Pinnacles suite to the over-the-top Golden Eagle Treehouse—a stylish aerie suspended over the Dan River Gorge—is designed to work in concert with the stunning mountain landscape visible from every corner of the property. One can’t help but spend a lot of time looking up here, including from the resort’s observatory dome where each night, the altitude and clarity of the night sky offers up some pretty impressive stargazing.

But summertime at Primland offers more earthbound pursuits, too—so many in fact, says Steve Helms, Primland’s vice president, that “people can stay for days and not do anything twice. It’s all about variety. We see families that haven’t experienced the shooting or ATVs before, and they have that bonding experience you get from doing those things together for the first time.” If you’re heading to Primland this summer, here are our picks for must-do activities … that is, for when you’re not looking up:

Mountain Biking: Bike a 6-mile section of the old Appalachian Trail that ran through the property from 1936 to 1948.

Sporting Clays: Choose from one of three courses, open year-round.

ATVs: Trek up the mountain and back on the resort’s 90 miles of trails.

Bow and BB-Gun Shooting Range: Opening midsummer and designed to appeal to the under-18 set. Primland.com
