4 Virginia Breweries With Destination Onsite Stays

Virginia’s craft beer scene offers an embarrassment of hoppy riches, with breweries spanning from the Chesapeake Bay to the Shenandoah Valley. Entire interstates, like Nelson County’s Highway 151—sometimes known as the Brew Ridge Trail—are now dedicated to this thriving industry. But while brewery hopping is a great adventure, especially with a designated driver, there’s something even more appealing about knowing that a comfortable place to rest is just a short distance from your final pint. These four brewery-based accommodations will have you saying, “I wish you were beer—er, here.”

Devils Backbone Brewing Co.

200 Crandall Run, Roseland | DBBrewingCompany.com

Looking to marry comfort with outdoor merriment? This vintage Airstream ($200) is for you. Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s vast Roseland campus offers an on-site restaurant, distillery, and a tricked-out Airstream on its nearby campsite. Complete with a firepit and patio seating, not to mention a TV, tiny fridge, oven, and dishwasher inside; no one would call this roughing it. After a decadent dinner of pub favorites at the property’s restaurant, just a five-minute stroll from camp, settle in next to the Airstream’s outdoor firepit for an evening of s’mores under the stars.

If the following day calls for hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, grab refreshments back at basecamp, like Devils Backbone’s cans of Orange Smash, a premium vodka and orange juice concoction that tastes like the best “out of office” message you can muster on your visit to central Virginia.

Blue Mountain Brewery

9585 Critzer Shop Rd., Afton | InnAtBlueMountain.com

The best wedding weekends offer guests plenty of diversions before the big “I do.” That’s likely why Blue Mountain Brewery’s 4,000-square-foot rental house is so in demand. It’s at the center of a libation destination, surrounded by five breweries, seven wineries, three cideries, and a meadery. “We book a lot of weddings, bachelor and bachelorette parties, and big family trips,” says Martha Hayman, the brewery’s director of events. Mere steps from the property’s beer garden and restaurant sits the home that comfortably sleeps twelve ($750). Equipped with a wraparound porch, large kitchen, vast lawn for corn hole, and even a hot tub, it’s no surprise that big groups would see its potential for easy access to a bevy of beverages—as well as the best of the Blue Ridge, its hiking trails, ski slopes, and spa scene included.

Hopkins Ordinary Bed & Breakfast + Ale Works

47 Main St., Sperryville | HopkinsOrdinary.com

The village of Sperryville, located at the entrance to Shenandoah National Park, is a charming destination for anyone craving some old-school Virginia vibes. It boasts a handful of excellent restaurants, including the Black Twig, Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen, and Three Blacksmiths, a spot that requires a reservation months in advance. The pleasant downtown feels like a page torn from a history book, and there’s a charming creek walk to explore.

To enjoy the best of this hamlet, book a room at Hopkins Ordinary, which has been operating as an inn (with only a few interruptions) since 1820. With vast porches overlooking the main street, you may sit a spell on the porch swing, then, Thursday through Sunday nights, head to the English basement bar below the building to try one of the small batch brews. From the cool and cozy confines of the rock-walled cellar, you can sip a Farmer’s Tan Saison or Second Breakfast Stout while playing chess. When you’ve had your fill, merely head upstairs to your 19th-century room ($289) to catch a few winks.

Stable Craft Brewery

375 Madrid Rd., Waynesboro | StableCraftBrewing.com

Many diversions might attract you to the rolling farms and fields of the Shenandoah Valley. You may find yourself there for a visit to the charming city of Staunton, the birthplace of President Wilson and home to the annual Queen City Mischief and Magic Festival. Or maybe you’re passing through to see Luray Caverns, the breathtaking underground cave system that ranks as the largest in the Southeast. Whatever your reasons for a visit, a pitstop and pint at Stable Craft Brewery is a chance to make it all the better.

This gorgeous complex overlooks red barn-dotted farms and offers live music, a beer garden, a children’s play area, and a lengthy beer list. Indulge in poutine while listening to a cover band play British Invasion tunes, safe in the knowledge that your bed is just steps away. Stable Craft has two onsite accommodations, the Paddock ($139) and the Blue Ridge ($149), both with porch-front hot tubs. Soak and sip a hazy honey malt Robot Cowboy or rest by an electric fireplace inside before snuggling deep into the arms of Morpheus.
