Marymount’s Program Achieves First-Ever CEC Accreditation

Marymount University’s School of Education has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, becoming the nation’s first special education program to receive accreditation from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the leading authority in special education standards. This distinguished recognition validates the program’s commitment to preparing educators for successful, long-term careers in special education.

“This accreditation reflects our dedication to excellence and strengthens our mission of providing teachers with tools to become change agents,” says Dr. Nicci Dowd, assistant professor at Marymount’s School of Education. “We’re committed to preparing students with evidence-based practices that will make a difference in the lives of diverse learners.”

The university offers three comprehensive paths: a bachelor’s or a master’s in Special Education and an online graduate certificate. These programs integrate real-world experience with theoretical foundations, preparing educators to implement effective strategies for learners facing various challenges. The curriculum emphasizes literacy, mathematics, communication skills, and successful integration into the learning community.

The online certificate program offers working professionals flexibility to enhance their skills while collaborating with local and international educators. Credits earned can be applied toward a Master’s in Education with licensure at Marymount.

“Marymount has shown its commitment to upholding the highest standards in preparing future educators,” notes Dr. Rebecca Watts, CEC Accreditation Commission chair. This prestigious recognition ensures graduates are equipped to support the development and education of children with diverse learning needs. Marymount.edu
