Spring is here, and with it comes the garden season. The scenes here may be old, outdated or even enhanced, but the beauty they depict, at least, is perennial.

Penny Postcards:
Italian Garden, RICHMOND
Using elements of the classical style developed in 16th and 17th century Italy, Maymont’s Italian Garden has become a staple of modern-day Richmond. The scene in this early-20th century postcard looks just as appealing as the actual garden today
Bolar, BATH COUNTY
“I am freezing and I have a nice headache,” lamented the writer of this card who would prefer the beauty of this Bath County scene be credited to the card’s artist: “This place is not so beautiful as this picture would lead one to believe.”
Norfolk City Park, NORFOLK
Known today as Lafayette, the name isn’t the only aspect of City Park that’s changed: gone is the glass conservatory as well, replaced by the adjacent Ernie Morgan Environmental Action Center.
