Is it over for the mid-century modern and farmhouse trends?
Classic styles are making a comeback.
The time may have come to say goodbye to your mid-century Eames chairs and teak sideboards or—depending on your taste—rustic farmhouse furnishings. Times, and designs, are changing.
“The straightforward lines of mid-century seem to be a little too severe,” says Cindy Lloyd of Feather Your Nest and Cindy Lloyd Design in Warsaw of the simple, functional furniture that has dominated design since its rise to popularity more than 40 years ago. “What I’m noticing is a return to classic styles, such as Lawson style sofas, or turned legs on chairs.”
The modern farmhouse movement mixed contemporary design with a side of nostalgia—think wooden beams, Edison bulbs, whitewashed wood, and homespun décor. There are signs this trend is fading, as well.
“As the farmhouse look is phasing out, there is less interest in galvanized items and white enamel,” Lloyd says. “The trends are shifting towards a real pop of strong colors for islands, such as navy, orange, and emerald green. Metals are still very much desired, with the addition of brushed gold leading the way.”
