First American Christmas Tree

Whereupon illustrator Sterling Hundley discovers great moments of Virginia history

Born in Westphalia in 1814, Charles Minnegerode brought the Christmas tree to America. Legend has the classics professor (and later rector of St. Paul’s in Richmond) trimming a tree at the St. George Tucker house in Williamsburg. The children were enthralled at this German tradition, and it caught on.
