On Oct. 15, 2016, the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, which replaced the Yorktown Victory Center in spring 2015, opened 22,000 square feet of new exhibition galleries and debuted Liberty Fever, an introductory film that aims to immerse visitors in the time period.
Visitors can relive the Siege of Yorktown in an experiential theater complete with wind, smoke and the sounds of cannon fire, and see more than 500 artifacts from the period, including early portraits, documentary precursors to the Declaration of Independence and rare ammunition.
Work continues on an outdoor living-history exhibit, was set to be completed in March 2017, that will include a Revolutionary War encampment adjoining the outdoor spaces of the museum. It will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to walk through soldier and officer tents, a surgeon’s quarters and an artillery drill field. Beyond the encampment is a Revolution-era farm, modeled after that of a York County family, which will include a house, barns, kitchen, garden, orchard, crop fields and slave quarters.
Both sites are open during construction and visitors are invited to try their hand at various activities like cloth-making and military drills. HistoryIsFun.org
