The trend of “drinking with purpose” has exploded in popularity. From arcade bars to virtual golf, there are a plethora of options for doing something while sipping a cocktail. But where did this fascination begin?
The convergence of art and wine can help make your social less stressful.
In the early 2000s, “paint and sip” franchises began popping up all over the country. The concept typically involves a few glasses of wine and trying your hand at a step-by-step canvas painting with pre-traced outlines for beginners. Popular for girls’ nights out, get-togethers, and even company events, there’s a belief that people are drawn to the concept for its relaxing qualities.
“Everybody has busy lives,” says Katharina Rothweiler from her Wine & Design studio in Alexandria. “It gives them a creative outlet, and it’s almost therapeutic for them.”
While paint and sip events are not officially categorized as art therapy, simple acts of creative expression are proven to reduce stress and anxiety. According to Forbes, creative activities like drawing or painting allow a person to enter a state of “flow,” where they become completely absorbed in something. Then, “your brain is flooded with dopamine, that feel-good chemical that actually helps motivate you.”
