Riding the Rails

More trains to ride

The Buckingham Branch Railroad in Dillwyn runs 1- and 3-hour passenger excursions in the fall and spring, sponsored by the Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (ODCNRHS.org, as cited above). It is as close as you can get to riding on a model railroad, with tight curves, rustic scenery, and cliffs so close you could touch them (although you are supposed to keep your hands inside the train). Highly recommended.

Railroad Museums

The number one railroad museum in the state is The Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke! Home of the last large steam passenger locomotive that still pulls excursions. The Norfollk & Western 611 was built in the shops of the N&W in Roanoke in 1950. The inventory of rolling stock includes steam, electric, and diesel locomotives not found anywhere else. This museum should be at the top of the list of "must see" museums!

RR Museums

Adventure deep into the NNK and see another GREAT railroad museum! The Reedville Fishermen's Museum has an entire building dedicated to the "railroad that never was"... a model of the turn-of-the-century railroad proposed to cover the NNK. This is a great display, in miniature. Contact the RFM at 804-453-6529 for details!
