Appealing to your inner Indiana Jones doesn’t have to mean escaping the mines in Temple of Doom. Indy’s mission was first and foremost to advance our knowledge of ancient mysteries. Get in on the same action here in Virginia (without facing vipers and Nazis) and learn the basics of archaeological excavation at these historic hotspots.
Montpelier’s Archaeological Expeditions: Dormitory-style accommodations are available in the antebellum Arlington House on the grounds of Montpelier. Each expedition lasts six days and costs $650. This year participants will be digging at various 18th-century slave quarter sites. Montpelier.org
The Jamestown Rediscovery Project: Enroll in the summer field school run through UVA’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies for about $2,400. Stay at the College of William and Mary and help uncover the remains of the 1607 James Fort. APVA.org/Rediscovery
Alexandria Archaeology: Kids ages 12-15 can spend their summer digging away at a Civil War-era site, or the whole crew can roll up their sleeves for Family Dig Days. The latter costs $5 per person. AlexandriaVa.gov
