Made in Virginia 2014: Willie Byrd Sauce, Richmond

Willie Byrd Sauce

Ann Colby’s dad, Willie, used to keep his secret recipe chocolate sauce in a cupboard next to a little spoon—a handy co-conspirator in pilfering sweet spoonfuls on the sly. In 1994, her mother gave Ann the recipe as a gift. Rather than hold onto the secret, Ann and her daughters Scottie Phillips and Helen Lohmar launched a line of dark chocolate sauces and named them for their originator. Willie Byrd Dark Chocolate sauces are available in four flavors: original dark, espresso, sea salt caramel and, seasonally, peppermint. They’re great on everything, from ice cream to pancakes to cheesecake to anything else that can be improved with chocolate. And now the team is working on more flavors (but it’s too soon to talk about them, says Scottie). Our spoon is already waiting in the cupboard. $8.99 per jar. WillieByrdSauce.com
