Walking the Ward With Gary Flowers

Explore Richmond’s historic Jackson Ward neighborhood through a 20-stop walking tour led by local historian and radio personality Gary L. Flowers. Learn about historic educational, economic, religious and social institutions that inspired the names “Black Wall Street” and “The Harlem of the South” for this neighborhood that served as an early model of Black capitalism in the United States. Attendees will meet in front of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia at 122 West Leigh Street, Richmond, VA 23220. The tours take approximately two hours and the distance is about one mile. This event is part of the Library’s programming related to the exhibition “House to Highway: Reclaiming a Community History,” on view at the Library from July 14, 2025, to Feb. 28, 2026. This is a free event, but registration is required. For more information, contact [email protected].
