Virtual Battle Brief – Valley Thunder: Custer in the Shenandoah

George Armstrong Custer will always be best known for his defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn against Northern Plains Indians in 1876. But over a decade earlier he served in the U.S. Army during the Civil War and saw action all over Virginia. Learn about Custer’s exploits in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864-65 from historian and museum educator John Maass. Dr. John R. Maass is an education specialist at the National Museum of the United States Army. He received a Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in early U.S. history and military history. His most recent book is “The Battle of Guilford Courthouse: A Most Desperate Engagement” (2020).
