Trumpeting Equality: The Women’s Suffrage March of 1913

The day before Woodrow Wilson’s first inauguration, March 3, 1913, women from around the nation marched in Washington, D. C. for the right to vote. Miss Inez Milholland, dressed in royal purple astride a white charger, signaled the start of the march with her trumpet. Reaction from the large crowd along the parade route was mixed. Many cheered in support while others roughly obstructed the suffragists in opposition. Troops from Ft. Myer were called to protect the marchers.
