Arches Gallery show: Asymmetrical

The Arches group show “Asymmetry” can be described as an exploration of the artists’ approach to the absence of symmetrical composition.  Asymmetry is not just a lack of evenness or regularity, but a deliberate decision to balance a work in an unmatched way.  The show opening is during Second Saturday at the Workhouse, held monthly. Many artists compose intuitively while others allow the composition to develop through experimentation rather than by formulas or guides. Still others structure their work with compositional tools to create more complexity relative to the more simple appearance of symmetry.  No matter the method, asymmetry invites the viewer to travel through the piece, observing the space and depth even without the obvious lines of perspectives. As they are drawn in, viewers are encouraged to look for the visual and experiential appeal and story behind a piece all while considering how the design influences meaning – such as the precarious balance in a piece may represent incompleteness, disorder or difficulty.  So, while the resulting asymmetrical balance in each work may be universal, each artist uses unique methods to create their own chosen effect. Arches Gallery in Building 9 is part of the Workhouse Arts Center and the opening is part of Second Saturday, 6-9pm 8 February. Second Saturday is a monthly event and will feature food, vendors, live music, and much more to entertain the whole family while you peruse through the Workhouse and all of its creative offerings. Arches Gallery has a new show every two months, featuring a new artist each time. Artists often give demonstrations and talks to let the viewers in on their process, and to explain more of the methods and content of their work.
