Chesterfield is making history as the future site of the world’s first grid-scale commercial nuclear fusion* power plant, with a goal of delivering power in the early 2030s.
Commonwealth Fusion System (CFS), a spin-off of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will independently finance, build, own, and operate the facility at the James River Industrial Park. CFS partnered with Dominion Energy in a non-financial collaboration.
“Virginia emerged as a strong partner as they seek innovative solutions for reliable electricity and clean forms of power. We are pleased to collaborate with Dominion Energy,” says Bob Mumgaard, CFS CEO and co-founder. Dominion Energy president Edward H. Baine says they are delighted to provide CFS with technical expertise and more as “our customers’ growing needs for reliable, carbon-free power benefits from a diverse menu of power generation options.”
