Inside Staunton’s Medieval Gift Shop

Few gift shops can claim an inventory of wax seals, chainmail armor, longswords, gambesons, cloak pins, and leather archery bracers—let alone ties to a Dragon Preservation Society. If such a place were to exist, it would belong in Staunton, settled among misty mountaintops and sprawling woodlands. Here, the postcard-perfect Beverly Street, watched over by a brick clock tower, sets the scene for a town abounding in magic, home to the annual Queen City Mischief & Magic Festival.

And in fact, this shop does exist: the Medieval Fantasies Company Gyfte Shoppe on South New Street. Its trove of historical fashion and weaponry sparks dreams of swashbuckling adventures in far-off lands. And for those eager to revel in the wonder, the shop provides immersive programs on Renaissance and Medieval life—plus the chance to join a Dragon Preservation Society in pursuit of the legendary, elusive beasts. Offerings include educational and recreational experiences, with opportunities for hands-on participation at summer camps and events. MedievalFantasiesCo.com
