From “Shangri-La” to Tokyo: The April 1942 Doolittle Raid
On April 18, 1942, Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle led a historic bombing raid on Tokyo. The “Doolittle Raid” shattered the Japanese belief that their mainland was safe from American air attacks, and it greatly improved American morale after the December 7, 1941, attack at Pearl Harbor. The B-25 Mitchell medium bombers took off from the USS Hornet, however, to confuse the Japanese, President Franklin Roosevelt announced the bombers had come from the mythical location of Shangri-La. Join VWM Director of Education Jim Triesler as he explores this momentous historic event from World War II.
